Whangaroa – Rich in History, Legends, and Big Game Fishing

Whangaroa township is a place of deep history and rich Māori legend. For those who’ve experienced its charm, it’s affectionately known as "The Jewel of the North," "Marlin Country," and a "Fisherman’s Paradise."

The Whangaroa NZ Swordfish & Big Game Incorporated Club was established in February 1925, later becoming the Whangaroa Big Gamefish Club. Since then, it has stood at the heart of one of New Zealand’s most renowned game fishing destinations.

Just beyond the harbour entrance lie some of the country’s finest fishing grounds. Stephensons Island, the Ruahine Reef, and the nearby Cavalli Islands offer exceptional opportunities for anglers, with an abundance of fish and world-class gamefishing waters.

Whether you’re chasing legendary catches or exploring the area's rich cultural heritage, Whangaroa offers an unforgettable experience on land and sea.
